Sergio Perez to leave Racing Point at the end of the 2020 season
Today it was announced that after 7 seasons with the team, Sergio Perez will leave Racing Point at the end of the 2020 season. Since the announcement that Sebastian Vettel would be leaving Ferrari, speculation has been building regarding the Racing Point and with Perez now leaving the team, those rumours look to be true.
Pressure has been building surround Perez’s seat and with Lance Stroll’s father owning the Racing Point team it only seemed inevitable that if any one of them were to leave it would be Perez.
With the rebrand to Aston Martin for 2021 it looks increasingly likely that Stroll will want that headline signing to establish themselves as future champions, with Sebastian Vettel that headline signing.
Perez commented that “I will always be grateful for the opportunity given to me by Vijay Mallya, who believed in me in 2014 and allowed me to continue my F1 career with Force India.”
Respected on the grid for his incredibly consistency, ability to manage tyres and for saving the Force India team when they were in dire straits, Perez sadly goes onto to say that “I don’t have a Plan B”.
Options are not dry for Perez, with Haas and Alfa Romeo looking set to revamp their driver line-ups for the 2021 season, but with Hulkenberg and the F2 potential graduates including Schumacher, Schwartzman and Illot, Perez will have to hope his experience will prove the clincher for any team.
